Ten years of war and destruction, hundreds of thousands dead: the statisitics reflect a nightmare that seems to have no end, even for the survivors. Very few still live in their homes: the war has discplaced half of the population. Many of them have found refuge in the province of Idlib. Three Syrians from different cities in the country, now living near Idlib, tell us about the war and displacement and their dreams of a better future, despite it all. Having lived through hell on earth, seeing the death of family and friends and losing everything thy had, they are now all trying to make a difference for themselves and others. All in their own unique way. Asma Haj Bakri is 30 years old and is mother to two children. She is originally from Khan Shaykun, north of Damascus. When the city was bombed in May 2015, she and her youngest son were wounded and had to see her oldest son die. After that, Asmaa decided to join the women’s division of the Syrian Civil Defence, the White Helmets. Abdel-Razzak, 48, is from Damascus. In 2012, he was arrested by the intelligence police for taking part in the protests against Bashar al-Assad. He, together with many others, was tortured, beaten and humiliated by special forces. The electrocution torture on chair made him sterile. He spent a total of 6 years and two months in prison. The painful memories haunt him to this day. But he does not want to forget: he tries to remember his sorrows through his art. Mohammad is 35 years old and originally comes from Homs. He arrived in the Idlib province in 2016 where he has since lived with his family at a camp, making soaps. He had to start from scratch again, having lost everything. He now is trying to put words to the pain of the Syrians through his writing, his words and videos are known to everyone. 🗓 Available until the10/03/2024 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
