Saving Europe's Amazon I Reportage I ARTE Documentary tv biosphere reserve
WATCH: Spanish Coast Under Threat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL4TcSl3bEw&list=PL-eZcc0GI8-XrdG8Uif4XK4KZHO0uIryk&index=46 On the borders of Belarus, Ukraine and Poland, Polesia is a swampy region with an area half the size of Germany. Considered the "Amazon of Europe", it is rich in biodiversity and home to brown bears, wolves, bison and rare bird species. However, this Eden is now threatened by the construction of a gigantic waterway. The E40 would become the longest waterway in Europe, connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea: 2,000 kilometres from Gdansk in Poland to Kherson in Ukraine. The destruction of huge floodplains and wetlands could be the result as well as huge, man-made extinction of species. The nature activists Irina Kashpei, Pavel Pinchuk and Elleni Vendras want to prevent exactly that. They have submitted an application to UNESCO to make Polesia a World Heritage Site and thus protect it from the bulldozers."Only recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site can save my homeland," says Irina Kashpei. She herself was born in Polesia, her grandmother still lives in the region. It's about her homeland and the survival of many endangered mammals and millions of birds. In order for her application to have a chance, the scientists are doing basic work. They count species and animals, document the enormous biodiversity, collect all the information they can. A battle against time - in Ukraine, construction work for the gigantic E40 waterway has already begun. The Pripyat River, heart of Polesia, has already been dredged and widened in many places - also in dangerous proximity to the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. 🗓 Available until the 08/12/2021 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
