Dakar I The City by the Sea I ARTE Documentary
WATCH: To the End of the World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkpIofPZ_oM&list=PL-eZcc0GI8-VPdXbcM4gRQvtdJLI-bh8A&index=53 The port city of Dakar, the capital of Senegal, on the west coast of Africa is a magnet, a cultural melting pot and for many the gateway to the world. Dakar is modern in its own, very African way. Fashion is made, music is recorded and art is exhibited. The women are independent and proud, this is as true for the only black female surfer in the country as for the fashion designer or the fisherwomen on the city beach. The young street artists and rappers show that in Dakar lust for life and struggle for survival are not mutually exclusive. On the offshore island of Gorรฉe, an old trading post that is now a World Heritage Site, the old Dakar is still alive, and on the city beaches along the Corniche, young people also meet to wrestle, which is the national sport. Dakar is a cosmopolitan and liberal metropolis where life pulsates around the clock. The mobile cinema starts its show after dark, later in the evening women meet to dance, and in the early hours of the morning the clubs open. Then people dance to mbalax, which combines West African rhythms with Western music styles like blues or funk. ๐ Available until the 26/06/2021 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
