Killing the Indian in the Child I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: One Man and his Island I Mauro Morandi on Budelli https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU2L9xKwQ3A The indigenous population of Canada has been the victim of cultural genocide. After movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, this taboo of Canadian history is finally also being exposed and denounced internationally. Between 1980 and 2012, 1,181 Indigenous women were murdered or reported missing in Canada. The fact that 24 per cent of all femicides in Canada are committed against Indigenous women is an effect of the systematic discrimination against First Nation peoples. Even 150 years after Canada's independence from Great Britain, the indigenous population is still systematically segregated from the rest of the population in reservations. The Indian Act, the so-called Indian legislation through which the British placed the indigenous population under guardianship, continues to exist. It also includes the goal of "civilisation". Within this framework, special boarding schools, so-called residential schools, were established in which indigenous children were to be re-educated to become Christians. Until 1996, these boarding schools were scenes of abuse and mistreatment. Around 4,000 children died here. The survivors of these re-education centres often suffer from alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic violence, femicide and suicide. This film accompanies a group of survivors in their struggle for justice and reparations. The Canadian state has admitted mistakes, but compensation for the traumatised and their descendants has not yet been granted. 🗓 Available until the 11/06/2021 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
