Climate Change and Democracy I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: Climate Emergency Worldwide ♻️ https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-eZcc0GI8-XrdG8Uif4XK4KZHO0uIryk After the "Yellow Vests" demonstrations against an eco-tax on petrol and the protest marches of the Fridays for Future movement, French President Emmanuel Macron is convening a Citizens' Council for the Climate in October 2019. He is providing five million euros for the "Convention Citoyenne pour le Climat". The 150 participants drawn by lot were a representative cross-section of the French population: a representation of men and women, young and old, high earners and irregular workers, capitalists and rural residents. The mandate of the French Citizens' Council was to find concrete answers to the climate emergency that reconciled environmental protection and social justice. An enormous task with an ambitious goal. How can French greenhouse gas emissions be reduced by at least 40 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels - and in such a way that poorer people do not suffer? To develop their recommendations, the members - most of whom were not familiar with such complex issues - first had to acquire expert knowledge and listen to the voices of decision-makers, politicians and experts. The 150-member committee was faced with the task of not abandoning its original aspirations despite a strong social mistrust. To develop climate solutions that were as sustainable as possible, they had to learn above all to think together about environmental issues, to become a collective and to ally with each other. But what developments should be proposed? A constitutional amendment, a referendum, an awareness campaign or levies and reforms? The body ended its work in June 2020. Against the background of strong political tensions due to the pension reform and in the midst of the Corona pandemic, the Citizens' Council has achieved its set goal - and perhaps even surpassed it with many good ideas for changing society. To what extent the government implements them is another matter. 🗓 Available until the 11/06/2021 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
