Bangladesh: the Children of Shame I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: Pakistan: Karachi's Forgotten 'Mad Women' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aN8o2fx0ro In the improvised camps that now hold 1 million refugees of the Muslim minority of the Rohingyas, probably thousands of young mothers live "in shame" - because the fathers of their children born nine months after the expulsion are soldiers and militiamen from Myanmar who raped them in their villages and expelled them to Bangladesh. No one knows exactly how many women have to live like this, because rape is a taboo in their community. Presumably, some women managed to abort their children; others gave their babies away to other families to escape the shame. Some mothers were rejected by their husbands together with their child because the family honour was stained. A handful of young women, however, defend themselves in a remarkable way against the fatality of family honour: they insist on keeping their child, because it is not their fault, and they hope for a new future - in the midst of the uncertainty of an ethnic conflict whose peaceful settlement is still unknown. 🗓 Available until the 15/11/2021 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
