The Birth of Christianity - ARTE’s landmark series on the history of Christian religion, produced in 2003, in ten episodes, tells how Christianity emerged between the death of Jesus around 30 CE and 150 CE. How long did it take Jesus to become Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Around the year 30 in Jerusalem, Jesus is crucified by the Romans. Three and a half centuries later, Christianity becomes the official religion of the Empire. Today, the Vatican has become the seat of the apostolic Roman Catholic Church: Rome has replaced Jerusalem. Can we consider Jesus to be at the origin of Christianity? Can it be said that he founded the Church? Jesus, in his lifetime, did not have the intention to found a religion. Rather, he proposed a new reading of the tradition of Israel and a particular form of belief within the boundaries of the Judaism of 70 AD. As such, Christianity is an anachronism and developed only after the death and later resurrection of Jesus. He did not put any measures in place as an institutional basis for what has become the Church but aimed to regroup a renewed and eschatological Israel. After his death, a Christian consciousness among Jesus’ followers developed and did so rather quickly. Christianism, as a distinct and institutionalized religion, however, emerged only in the fourth century.
