So local communities have set up their own militias to protect themselves. But those armed groups summarily torture and execute suspects without trial. "Koglwego" means "guardians of the forest" in mossi. This popular militia, which has existed in Burkina Faso since the 1990s, has grown a lot in recent years. More and more armed men are joining these self-defense groups and taking on tasks of a failed, weak and discredited state, which lacks the human and material resources to deal with the situation.
