Bacteria Killers I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: The Power of Touch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4Yw3hb8dkE&list=PL-eZcc0GI8-VwsXpjGgbQNatn9RQaIW8R&index=87 Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. In the search for alternative treatments, researchers are relying on organic structures that a scientific adventurer discovered a hundred years ago: viruses that attack bacteria. The fabulous story of these tiny structures reveals sometimes spectacular healing processes. Not least due to excessive consumption of medicines, more and more bacteria are becoming insensitive to antibiotics. According to the EU, this problem could soon become as explosive as the environmental issue - and antibiotic resistance threatens to become one of the main causes of death worldwide. Research must therefore find alternatives - not miracle cures, but permanently effective medicines. One such has already existed in the past: One hundred years ago, the French biologist Félix d'Hérelle discovered mysterious "bacteria-eating" viruses, so-called bacteriophages or phages for short. He successfully treated bacterial infections with these before the development of antibiotics, but his method fell into oblivion again. The rediscovery of phages is an adventure that takes us halfway around the world: to Tbilisi in Georgia, where Dr. Mzia Kutateladze at the Eliava Institute is following Félix d'Hérelle's example and treating patients from all over the world with bacteriophages; to New York, where experiments with the phage-produced enzyme lysine are being conducted at the instigation of Professor Vincent Fischetti; and to Paris, where new clinical trials give reason for hope. Is bacteriophage therapy the miracle medicine of the future?
