A Women's World I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: International Women's Day https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-eZcc0GI8-VFyocROxjFeyzW-gmmxfco Every year, 8 March is a day to celebrate women's rights around the world. While inequalities with men are fading in many areas and speech is becoming freer with movements like #MeToo, there is still a long way to go on many fronts. From Saudi Arabia, where women have only recently gained basic freedoms, to Afghanistan, where the return of the Taliban threatens the fragile progress of girls' education, to states in Europe and the United States that are rolling back on abortion rights, the status of women remains vulnerable. Although women represent 50% of the working-age population they globally still earn only 84% of their male counterparts and only 28% of managers and directors are female. Moreover, in 2020 only 25% of all MP's in the world were female. Some progress has undoubtedly been made but girls and women all over the world are still struggling when it comes to the right to equal opportunities and education, or the right to freely decide on their bodies and who to marry. This episode of 'Mapping the World' takes a global look at the status of women around the world today and puts it into a historical perspective. Beyond identifying persisting problems in equal rights between men and women, there are also examples of countries that are cultivating good practices. Rwanda, for example, is seeing the emergence of a female political class, while the Scandinavian countries have found effective ways of correcting wage inequalities between the two sexes.
