Myanmar's Bamboo Bridges I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: India: The Living Bridges - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DilgkXDAkU In northern Burma, villagers rebuild the bamboo bridge that connects them to the mainland. Each year it is washed away again by the floods of the Irrawaddy River. The village of Sin Kin lies outside the provincial town of Bhamo on a river island, a wealthy village. The mighty Irrawaddy Current, Myanmar's largest river, carries fertile mud to the fields of Sin Kin every year. But the location on a river island also means supply problems for the villagers. In summer, during the flood, there is no bridge to the mainland. Anyone who wants to go to Sin Kin has to take the boat. And that's relatively expensive - and with heavy loads, it can even be dangerous. Most of the villagers therefore long for the flood to recede every year, because then they can finally build their bamboo bridge again, the important mainland access. The residents drive together to the nearby forest to collect bamboo for the bridge. In November the trunks are largest and most powerful. Much of the bamboo grows in the forests around the villagers' fields. The work is unpaid, but later the use of the bridge is free for everyone from Sin Kin. The bridge builders erect the bridge as pure craftsmanship, without the use of nails or other metal. Above all, they pride themselves on the perfect organisation of their work. This is the only way to complete the construction in two days.
