Myanmar: A People’s Courage I ARTE Documentary
WATCH: Myanmar's Bamboo Bridges - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49ar_mTwHz4 On the 1st of February 2021, the Burmese head of government, Aung San Suu Kyi, and the president, Win Myint of the National League for Democracy (NLD) were arrested in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. The army declared a state of emergency and has given full powers to their commander-in-chief, Min Aung Hlaing. Citizens in all major cities have since taken to the streets to protest against the coup and for democracy. On foot and on motorbikes, staging concerts, practising passive resistance and going on strike - the opposition seems to grow daily. But the army is also hitting back ever harder, even shooting at peaceful demonstrators. The perpetrators of the coup d'état believe that the people, terrorised, will quickly return to serving the interests of the generals, but the Burmese refuse to back down. Régis Michel, who lived in Myanmar for a long time, is in contact with some of his relatives who tell him about their struggle. Among them is Soe Myint, the director of the private television station Mizzima TV. He has been banned from broadcasting since the coup, but they continue to report, on the internet. Despite all the threats, Mizzima TV has repeatedly shown its support for democracy and denounced the army's violence on a daily basis, writes Reporters Without Borders.
