Hysterectomies in India I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: Modi's India https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShCV8LLxWH4 It is one of the best-kept secrets of rural India, the tale of an evil in women's bodies that is supposedly better removed: the uterus. While in the West, a so-called hysterectomy is performed in an average of 2 out of 1000 women, in the whole of India the average is 17 out of 1000. In the western state of Maharashtra, the "Sugar Belt", it is even up to 350 out of 1000 women. Particularly affected are the women from the lowest castes. India is the second largest sugar producer in the world. Every year, a good 750,000 female workers migrate to the sugar barons' fields after the monsoon to harvest. Many of these women experience sever pain and decide to have hysterectomies so that they can keep working and earning a living. Lots of them have already given birth to several children; for many, menstruation is a burden during the hard work of cutting, bundling and loading the sugar cane in the intense heat for over 12 hours a day. Unscrupulous doctors from private clinics quickly convince them of the necessity of the operation, obviously without informing their patients about the risks and side effects. In general, hysterectomies, in other words the surgical removal of a woman's uterus, are not a medical necessity. The women pay between 250 to 500 euros for the operation, deducted from their pay, because they do not have health insurance. They hardly have time to recover after the operation as most of them have to return to the sugar cane fields far too early to pay their debts.
