Demining Ukraine I ARTE Documentary

WATCH: Russia, Ukraine and the Future of Crimea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGiuG9IGvbg&pbjreload=101 Mines and unexploded ordnance in the middle of Europe: this is now everyday life for young Ukrainians who meticulously and dangerously clear the ground of unexploded munitions, booby traps and mines. This is because since the beginning of the Ukraine war in 2014, explosive ordnance hidden in the ground has been threatening the lives of people in eastern Ukraine. So far, 13,000 people have died in this bloody conflict. In the east of the country alone, 2000 people have been killed or seriously injured by mines or unexploded ordnance residues. Worldwide, Ukraine is now the 5th most accident-prone country in terms of mines and unexploded ordnance. Young Ukrainians are therefore trying to clean up the soil in these eastern territories in painstaking and dangerous work. Jelena Tschisch has a law degree, but for the past two years she has been working as a deminer for the Danish Demining Group. Together with her colleagues, she cleans the floors by hand six days a week to give people back their freedom of movement and enable them to live safely. Aleksej Jaresko works alongside her. When war refugees came to his town, the trained psychologist wanted to get involved. Now he works in the conflict zone and has become a qualified expert in the detection and defusing of explosive objects. The biggest problem here is that the danger is omnipresent but invisible. Tatjana Welschina therefore works to make people and especially children aware of this invisible danger. She educates young school children about how to recognise explosive remnants of war.
