A real shock: the life of the once sporty, young social worker and her family changes abruptly. According to the doctors, she has a maximum of 18 months left. The only salvation: a donor heart. But in Germany the willingness to donate organs is extremely low. The diagnosis came as a complete surprise to Laura and her husband Tobias. Within a few months, her heart performance dropped to only 30 per cent. Laura loved to do be physically active, do horseback riding, go mountain climbing. The couple was just about to start planning a family. But her heart would not survive the strain of giving birth. She urgently needs a new organ: but, on average, the waiting time for a new organ in Germany is 6 years. According to the German Heart Centre Berlin, about a third of the patients on the waiting list in Germany do not make it to transplantation. In addition, only patients on the so-called high-urgency list get a heart. Laura would therefore have to be significantly worse off to be listed. A dilemma. Because then it could be too late. Donor organs are rare in this country, as is the willingness to have an organ donor pass. Germany is at the bottom of the European ranking: there are only eleven organ donors per million inhabitants in Germany, compared to 49 in Spain. There, organ donation is a natural part of patient care in the transition from life to death. It is anchored in the system. Unlike in Germany, the rule here is that every person is automatically a potential organ donor who has not actively objected during their lifetime or whose relatives have not expressly objected.
