Tunisia: 10 Years on from the Jasmine Revolution I ARTE Documentary
WATCH: Arab Spring: 10 Years on https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-eZcc0GI8-W-_xe6hhMPY1zcpi1HsiPE In January, exactly 10 years ago, Tunisians overthrew their ruler, after 23 years of dictatorship, peacefully, without weapons, against a police state, to the astonishment of the international public. This civil movement became known as the Jasmine Revolution. It became the model for the series of uprisings that followed in many other countries of the Middle East, the so-called Arab Spring. The movement deeply changed the region but has not brought the far-reaching political freedoms that many that went to the streets in 2011, had hoped for. Ten years later, gloom and bitterness, social frustration and economic disillusionment are spreading in Tunisia, despite some remarkable democratic achievements: Free elections, a president of the republic as guardian of the constitution, a balance of power to prevent a return to the single party of the past, a free press.... Still, however, discontent dominates, exacerbated by the economic crisis and made worse by COVID-19. Four Tunisians, including a student, an entrepreneur, an unemployed person and a care worker, tell us about their life today, 10 years after the Jasmine Revolution. Available until the 26/01/2024 ARTE Documentary is here to tell you more about what’s going on in the world of culture and current affairs with powerful, refreshing and entertaining docs subtitled in English for our international fans.
