The Moomins, as they are called, sprang from the fertile imagination of Scandinavian author Tove Jansson during the dark years of the Second World War. The cute creatures, who inspired hope at the time, grew close to the hearts of Finns as the embodiment of family and childhood and have since become the most famous of all Finnish families. The quirky family, including Moominpappa, Moominmamma and their son Moomitroll first appeared in a series of illustrated children’s novels in the 1940s. Nowadays, they are known by children around the world thanks to a cartoon adaptation. While at first sight, the troll creatures seem a little naïve, the author used them to put forward a moral that was quite revolutionary for the time.Today, Tove Jansson has become a feminist icon as both a painter and writer. Island-hoping through the Finnish countryside, Jansson lived an eventful life without caring of what others might think of her. The Moomins have many autobiographical details and the Moominfamily is an embodiment of her own, human family. On their adventures, the Moomins crisscross the Moominvalley, a Finnish dreamland, inspired by the Pellinki archipelago, in the Baltic Sea. About 100 kilometers from Helsinki Jansson spent her summers there with her parents when she was still a child. The natural settings became the author's inspiration for the Moominvalley.
