minutephysics: How to Build a Lava Moat (with xkcd)

Teacher or professor: minutephysics
Subject: Physics
Content of the Lesson: Where to Buy "How To" by Randall Munroe: · PRH.com: https://bit.ly/2L2G5hy · Amazon: https://bit.ly/2zfy974 · Barnes and Noble: https://bit.ly/2Zozxmt · IndieBound: https://bit.ly/2ZfwSre · Books-A-Million: https://bit.ly/2ZfxD3y · Apple Books: https://bit.ly/33TK3kX The world's most entertaining and useless self-help guide, from the brilliant mind behind the wildly popular webcomic xkcd and the #1 New York Times bestsellers What If? and Thing Explainer For any task you might want to do, there's a right way, a wrong way, and a way so monumentally complex, excessive, and inadvisable that no one would ever try it. How To is a guide to the third kind of approach. It's full of highly impractical advice for everything from landing a plane to digging a hole. Bestselling author and cartoonist Randall Munroe explains how to predict the weather by analyzing the pixels of your Facebook photos. He teaches you how to tell if you're a baby boomer or a 90's kid by measuring the radioactivity of your teeth. He offers tips for taking a selfie with a telescope, crossing a river by boiling it, and powering your house by destroying the fabric of space-time. And if you want to get rid of the book once you're done with it, he walks you through your options for proper disposal, including dissolving it in the ocean, converting it to a vapor, using tectonic plates to subduct it into the Earth's mantle, or launching it into the Sun. By exploring the most complicated ways to do simple tasks, Munroe doesn't just make things difficult for himself and his readers. As he did so brilliantly in What If?, Munroe invites us to explore the most absurd reaches of the possible. Full of clever infographics and amusing illustrations, How To is a delightfully mind-bending way to better understand the science and technology underlying the things we do every day. Cosmic Queries - Across the Universe with Neil deGrasse Tyson

Teacher or professor: StarTalk
Subject: Astronomy
Content of the Lesson: Check out https://www.CuriosityStream.com/startalk and use code "startalk" to get your first 31 days free! On this episode of StarTalk Radio, your personal astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is back alongside comic co-host Chuck Nice to answer fan-submitted questions on a variety of topics that take us across the universe and into the unknown. You’ll find out why the universe will ultimately die “not with a bang, but with a whimper. And not in fire, but in ice.” Explore the relationship between time and space as we ponder the fabric of spacetime. You’ll even hear about the possibilities of a universe inside of another universe. Discover more about the concept of the holographic universe. We investigate electron microscopes and why they let us see more than light-based microscopes. You’ll also learn why matter is waves and particles. You’ll find out more about moving around in zero gravity and how you could propel a wheelchair while floating in space. Explore Hawking radiation. You’ll learn more about gravitational redshifts. We calculate the impact of merging black holes. We also discuss time dilation: do electromagnetic signals get warped by time dilation? Neil explains the Fermi paradox and “The Great Filter.” We ponder if the urge to explore the universe is the same urge that might destroy us. We try and work out a design that would make solar panels and lasers work together for wireless energy transfer. Get details why the future imagined by the 1950s-60s has been reshaped by the accessibility of information. All that, plus, Neil advocates for common core math and the importance of asking the right questions. #BlackHoles #Science #StarTalk This episode originally aired on March 1, 2019.

Climate Change Denier Claims Wind Science Is Fake || Comments Of The Day

I'm not sure what they mean by "wind science" but they don't think that thermodynamics works in the case of wind. Our Food System is Rigged feat. Sheril Kirshenbaum | Hot Mess

Teacher or professor: Hot Mess
Subject: Biology
Content of the Lesson: It’s not as easy as we want it to be. Lots of references below! Like this video? SUBSCRIBE to Hot Mess! ►► http://bit.ly/hotmess_sub The way we eat is unsustainable for the climate. Our food system contributes a massive amount of greenhouse gas emissions and touches basically every facet of our life. Modern diets also contribute to millions of lost lives every year from all the negative health outcomes. The answer is pretty simple on paper: We need to convert more of our diet to plant-based foods, and away from red meat. But in practice? It’s nowhere near that easy. How can something so necessary be so hard? We talked to food policy expert Sheril Kirshenbaum to learn more. #climate #climatechange #globalwarming Read more: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GU6_Rvwlb6sYwB3Bwiy9T6z3ub4ljXTSLI6KRff39og/edit?usp=sharing Connect with us on: Twitter: https://twitter.com/HotMessPBS Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hotmesspbs Facebook: http://facebook.com/hotmesspbs Hot Mess T-shirts!: https://store.dftba.com/products/hot-mess-shirt ----------- Host: Miriam Nielsen Guest: Sheril Kirshenbaum Writers: Miriam Nielsen and Sheril Kirshenbaum Editor-in-chief: Joe Hanson Creative Director: David Schulte Executive Producer: Amanda Fox Producer: Stephanie Noone Editor/Animator: Sara Roma Camera: Miriam Nielsen ----------- Produced by PBS Digital Studios Theme Music: Eric Friend/Optical Audio Music: APM

European Space Agency, ESA: ExoMars – Protection for life on Mars

Teacher or professor: European Space Agency, ESA
Subject: Astronautics
Content of the Lesson: The ExoMars mission foresees Rosalind Franklin the rover and its surface platform Kazachok landing on the Red Planet in 2021. The rover will move across many types of terrain, collect samples with a 2 m-long drill and analyse them with instruments in its onboard laboratory. This episode about ExoMars shows the integration of the locomotion system and the science payload to the rover in a specially designed, fit-for-purpose cleanroom at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, United Kingdom. Mars is a primary target in the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life, past or present. There are stringent planetary protection requirements in place to make sure that ExoMars does not introduce terrestrial biological contamination to the Red Planet. ESA ensures planetary protection according to the legal obligations of the United Nations Outer Space Treaty. Microbiological contamination is strictly controlled during the assembly of the rover. The cleanroom is amongst the cleanest places on Earth, cleaner than a standard hospital operating theatre thanks to filtered air, application of rigorous cleanliness procedures and workers who remain fully shrouded within ‘bunny suits’. The rover spent 18 months at Stevenage before departing for Airbus Toulouse, France at the end of August, for four months of environmental testing to confirm it is ready for the conditions on Mars.
